Journey from star to star


How excited humans of the earth star system were when the first images transmitted by the walking robots sent on massive intersteller ships to the 3 closest stars of Alpha Centauri arrived. These were the first close up images of planets of a different star ever to be seen by humans of earth. All over the star system people watched in awe the newly arrived images that showed, surprisingly to many, that the planets and moons of the stars were very much like those of the star planet earth orbits. The pioneering humans living in the outposts on moons of Jupiter were the first humans to know what the planets of Alpha Centauri look like. The two yellow stars Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B hold the most planets, each with terrestrial planets in the innermost orbits, and gas giants in the outermost orbits. Just like the earth system, the planets had swept up most of the icy chunks of matter, in carving out their paths over a period of millions of star rotations (planet orbits), forming near perfect beautiful colorful spheres. The inner terrestrial planets have no moons, but the outer terrestrial planets have a few spherical moons and captured ice chunk moons. The 2 Centauri stars are separated by less than a light year and take billions of earth years to rotate each other.

The planets display a diverse spectrum of matter, each with a variety of solids, liquids and gases.

People of the earth system were excited to see the first planets of a different star, but perhaps even more exciting were the surface scan results of each planet, that would be transmitted over the next years. The planetary surface scans, conducted by teams of robots in smaller ships, show images of the planets and moons surface at high resolution and can show if any living objects are moving on the surface or in the oceans. Although there is no life on any of the terrestrial or jovian (gas giant) moons, the most exciting news reported by the robots showed that one terrestrial planet of Alpha Centauri A, was home to a variety of species both in water oceans and on the solid surface. The planet is evidence of the theory that heavier atoms gravitate closest to a star, while lighter atoms remain in outer orbits. The theory is that any matter large enough and between a certain distance from a star will have liquid H2O on the outside, be formed around an iron center, and even take the same initial course of evolution, the forming of single cell oxygen producing bacteria. While, the humans of the distant earth did not know how similar the nucleic acid building blocks of this newly uncovered life are to DNA, images of large four leg surface moving species, shocked and frightened many humans of earth that had never seen life of a different star system, or perhaps were not prepared for the realization that DNA and life was much more common than previously thought.

No humans do physical labor anymore, that all ended thousands of years before now. Robots do all the manual labor, cleaning, planting, watering and harvesting plants, fruits and vegtables (feeding and killing of cows, chicken and pigs - could be completely replaced by synthetic). I own a number of robots that shop, cook, clean and transport me around the ship. Moving from one side of the ship to the other can take days of travel.

I have reproduced a number of times with a variety of people. Robots watch over new born (with parents). Newborn humans are protected, and fed by robots. Humans are spared from doing repetative tasks like teaching a child how to walk, read, write and type. The life of a human may last up to 200 years. Robots teach, shop, cook, clean, drive and are a source of information and protection for humans of all ages. As a human grows, much of their time is spent with other humans of the same age, although parents usually remain good (best) friends with each other and their children/offspring, and there are many friendships and relationships between people of different ages.

On the ship, and ofcourse, anywhere in the star systems humans live in, not all humans have the same amount of wealth. Although wealth is all electronic and determined by the amount of money stored in banks, according to a millions year old tradition that dates back to a time when people actually traded larger physical objects like seeds, pieces of metal, paper and plastic. Even though, all the humans look the same, some inherit, own, and control more money than others. Even though, a human that owns a large portion of a moon cannot be in every part of the moon to maintain ownership, the tradition of money is so strong that large systems of people that depend on wealthy individual people exist that allow them to own and control large portions of property.

Some parts of planets, moons, and ships are collectively owned by people through the central government, corporations, or by individual humans. This ship is owned by a corporation, over time, the corporations were better at building and selling ships. There was a time when people tried to build ships through the central government, but the central government now only provides free food, clean water, stops violence and property theft and is mostly active on planet earth.

The ship we live on is an entire civilization, we have hospitals, jails, schools, . The prisons are almost always nearly empty, but are maintained for emergencies or in the unusual event that a person uses violence. There are plenty of ways to use violence, hand held lasers, and metal bullet guns are the most common weapons used to do violence. (Some ships and even large portions of moons are gun free, no guns are allowed inside the volume of space and any guns found (although with complete freedom of all information, something happening without people seeing is almost impossible) are moved to a location where guns are allowed). The most violence is still on planet earth, and earth remains the most dangerous part of this civilization. I think the reason for this is because some humans on earth, have never ever left the surface of the planet, and view life outside of earth as being unnatural, fake, or artificial.





We are a group of a few million humans moving to the Sirius (Epsilon Eridani, Tau Ceti, Procyon) system. Many of the people on this ship want to escape the well established customs and traditions of humans living around well developed stars like Centauri, Barnard Star, and the small red stars in the earth/human star systems civilization/alliance.

No where on the ship does a human not hear and feel the sound of the mighty engines that propel the ship forward at the fastest speed ever achieved by human made machines. All the ships are designed and built by robots, with humans adding minor changes and advice. The robots store much more information that any one human, and therefore can understand the entire design of the ship faster and more completely.

These calculations are wrong, probably because, no ship made of photons will be able to accelerate to a velocity faster than a photon.  Perhaps ships could go ½ the velocity of photons if the photons separated moved as close to 180 degrees as possible.  Many photons will probably move in different directions and contribute little to the forward acceleration and velocity.  Eventually (possibly) accelerating the ship will be more difficult, in addition, the ship will be losing matter in the form of fuel.

 

Perhaps these ships will be hydrogen+antihydrogen ships, or perhaps some dense atom like platinum will be separated with antiprotons, antielectrons, or antineutrons.

The ship I live on is a colossal object.  Of the 500 million rooms, 5 million are the largest and most expensive, usually for the most popular, and wealthiest.  There are 200 million larger units, each with bathing rooms and cooking rooms.  The last 300 million are standard units.  At least 50 million are empty to provide space for new life.

 

This ship only contains humans and various plant species.  The plants provide the only source of food for the human for the 100 year jouney.

 

 

The engines are massive/mighty/huge/very big, and send 10e20 photons in the opposite direction, with a combined heat that compares to the surface of a star.

 

These ships have evolved over a thousand years of experiment and design.
